A Kerala Muslim wedding centres on the nikah, the marriage contract agreed before an officiant and witnesses, with a mahr gift from the groom to the bride. It is often preceded by a mylanchi (henna) night with oppana songs and followed by a reception feast, famously Malabar biriyani.

Before the wedding

  • Mylanchi. The henna night, when the bride’s hands are decorated with henna among family and friends.
  • Oppana. In Malabar, women sing and clap around the bride in a celebratory song and dance. Mappila songs, the region’s own musical tradition, are often part of the evening.

The nikah

The nikah is the essential ceremony: a marriage contract agreed in front of an officiant and witnesses, often at the mosque or a family venue. The mahr, a gift from the groom to the bride, is agreed as part of it. In many Kerala families the contract is agreed between the groom and the bride’s guardian, with the bride’s consent given beforehand. Customs vary between families and communities.

The reception

After the nikah, the families host a reception, and the groom’s family traditionally hosts a walima feast. Malabar is famous for its wedding food, especially biriyani.

What does the bride wear?

Often a richly embroidered saree or lehenga with a matching head covering, called a thattam in Malabar, and gold jewellery.

Planning tips

  • Weddings are not usually held during Ramadan.
  • Venues and caterers should be briefed on halal food and on arrangements for separate seating if the families prefer it.
