Muhurtham date checker: is your wedding date auspicious?

You already have a date in mind, for a venue, a flight or a family reason. See what the calendar says about it.

Updated Kalyan Co Planning Team

How it works

Pick a date and a tradition. The checker computes the panchangam at sunrise for that day, in Kochi for Kerala weddings or New Delhi for North Indian ones, and applies the commonly published rules: a favourable nakshatra, no rikta or ashtami tithi, no inauspicious yoga, no Karkidakam or chaturmas, and Venus and Jupiter not combust. It tells you whether the date is a candidate muhurtham and why, with the auspicious window in IST. Your priest or astrologer confirms the exact time and matches horoscopes.

Tradition

Pick a date to see its nakshatra, tithi and whether it passes the usual wedding rules.

Why a date fails

Most dates fail for one of a few reasons, and the checker names them. The nakshatra at sunrise is not one of the eleven traditionally favoured for weddings. The tithi is a rikta tithi (the fourth, ninth or fourteenth), an ashtami or amavasya. The yoga is one of the nine avoided. Or the month itself is set aside: Karkidakam in Kerala, and chaturmas, kharmas or an adhika month in the North Indian calendar. Venus or Jupiter being combust (too close to the Sun) also rules a date out in both traditions.

If your date fails

Look at the dates around it. The yearly tables list every candidate, by month, with the auspicious window: Kerala 2026 (67), North Indian 2026 (40), Kerala 2027 (66), North Indian 2027 (53), Kerala 2028 (66), North Indian 2028 (48). Many families also hold the ceremony on the muhurtham and the celebration on the date the venue has free.

How we calculate

Sun and Moon positions come from the open-source astronomy-engine library, converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa. We compute the tithi, nakshatra and yoga at local sunrise, the Malayalam solar month and the lunar month with adhika months, and check Venus and Jupiter for combustion. Engine: panchang-1.0 (astronomy-engine 2.1.19, Lahiri). Reckoned at sunrise in Kochi. Avoids Karkidakam and moudhyam (combust Venus or Jupiter). Reckoned at sunrise in New Delhi. Avoids chaturmas, kharmas, adhik maas and combust Venus or Jupiter.

Questions couples ask

Is a date that passes the checker a confirmed muhurtham?

It is a candidate. The checker applies the commonly published calendar rules. Families and astrologers add horoscope matching and choose the lagnam, the exact time within the window.

Why does the same date pass for Kerala and fail for North India?

The two traditions use different calendars and different lists of months to avoid. Kerala follows the Malayalam solar calendar reckoned at Kochi; North Indian weddings follow the lunar calendar reckoned at New Delhi.

Can I check a date for a Christian or Muslim wedding?

The checker applies Hindu calendar rules. For Christian weddings, churches set their own calendar and most avoid Lent; Muslim weddings are not usually held during Ramadan.

Which years can I check?

Any date from 2025 to 2032. The yearly tables cover 2026 to 2028 with downloads.
