Candidate wedding dates for Kerala and North Indian Hindu traditions, worked out from the panchangam, with the reasoning for every date.

Updated Kalyan Co Planning Team

A wedding muhurtham is an auspicious date and time chosen from the Hindu calendar. Kerala dates follow the Malayalam solar calendar, reckoned at Kochi; North Indian vivah muhurat dates follow the lunar calendar, reckoned at New Delhi. Use the dates below to shortlist, then confirm the time with your priest or astrologer.

Kerala (Malayalam calendar)

Reckoned at sunrise in Kochi. Avoids Karkidakam and moudhyam (combust Venus or Jupiter).

North Indian (Hindi calendar)

Reckoned at sunrise in New Delhi. Avoids chaturmas, kharmas, adhik maas and combust Venus or Jupiter.

Muhurtham questions

What is a muhurtham?

A muhurtham (muhurat in Hindi) is an auspicious time for a ceremony, chosen from the Hindu calendar. For weddings it depends mainly on the nakshatra (lunar mansion), the tithi (lunar day), the yoga and the month, and families then fix the exact time with an astrologer.

Why do Kerala and North Indian muhurtham dates differ?

Kerala follows the Malayalam solar calendar and avoids the month of Karkidakam, while North Indian families follow a lunar calendar and avoid chaturmas, kharmas and adhik maas. Local sunrise also changes which nakshatra is current, so the lists overlap but are not the same.

Are these dates final?

They are candidate dates computed from standard rules. Families usually confirm the date and exact time with their own priest or astrologer, who also matches the couple’s horoscopes.

Do we need a muhurtham for a fusion or civil wedding?

No. Many couples from abroad choose a date for the weather and flights; some then ask us to time the ceremony, such as the garland exchange or lamp lighting, within a muhurtham window on that day.

How we calculate

Sun and Moon positions come from the open-source astronomy-engine library, converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa. We compute the tithi, nakshatra and yoga at local sunrise, the Malayalam solar month and the lunar month (with adhika months), and check Venus and Jupiter for combustion.

Engine: panchang-1.0 (astronomy-engine 2.1.19, Lahiri). The rules are the commonly published ones; families add more, such as horoscope matching and lagnam.
